“Overcoming Fear”

Pastor Paul DeMerchant – April 7, 2013

Scripture:  2 Timothy 1:1-7 “This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. I have been sent out to tell others about the life he has promised through faith in Christ Jesus. I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. Timothy, I thank God for you-the God I serve with a clear conscience, just as my ancestors did. Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again. I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (NLT)”

Question:  What paralyses you from moving forward with God?

Healthy Fear – vs. – Unhealthy Fear

·        Deut. 10:12-13 Deuteronomy 10:12-13  "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And you must always obey the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.” (NLT)

·        Psalm 25:12 Psalm 25:12 “Who are those who fear the LORD? He will show them the path they should choose.” (NLT)

·        Prov. 9:10 “Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” (NLT)

·        Prov. 15:16 “…Better to have little, with fear for the LORD, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.” (NLT)

*Paralyzing fear does not come from God!

God given Resources to overcoming fear:

a.     The Spirit of ____________.

Romans 8:11 “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” (NLT)

b.     The Spirit of ____________.

Mark 12:30-31 “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these." (NLT)

1 John 4:18 “Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear…”  (NLT)

c.      The Spirit of _____________.

Philippians 4:7 “Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (NLT)
